OVERVIEW

  • The Kenosha Rotary Safety Center at 5716 14th Avenue houses the Safety Education Division of the Kenosha Police Department.

  • The Kenosha Police Department’s Safety Officer, along with a civilian assistant, are responsible for scheduling safety classes throughout the entire school year with private, public and parochial schools. Grade levels include pre-school, kindergarten, first grade, third grade and fifth grade. Safety subjects cover a variety of areas according to grade level. See attached Kenosha Unified School Safety Education Curriculum.

  • The Safety Officer is also responsible for the training and supervision of the adult crossing guards, along with the training of the elementary schools’ safety patrol cadets.

  • Per city school PTAs the safety officer conducts background investigations for those parents who apply to be part of the Smiley House (Safe Haven) program.

  • During the summer, the safety officer conducts background investigations for those parents who enroll their child/children for one-week safety sessions during the months of June, July and August.

  • With time permitting, during the months of May through August, two to six bike rodeos are held, along with various speaking engagements.

PURPOSE
The purpose of the Kenosha Rotary Safety Center and Safety Education Officer is to:

  • Encourage a positive relationship between the child and police department.

  • Install important safety values with the elementary school children.

  • Reduce the chance of children becoming victims of crimes.

  • Provide a safe environment around the elementary school.


ROTARY SAFETY CENTER PROGRAM

  • SAFETY CLASSES

    • Kenosha public and private schools

    • Preschool, kindergartens, 1st, 3rd and 5th grades daily;

    • Occasional junior high babysitting program

    • October – May

    • Classes currently are bussed courtesy of Laidlaw Bus Company; safety officer and assistant possess commercial driver’s licenses.

 

  • SAFETY PATROL

    • September – training via slide or taped program at each elementary school. Also swearing-in ceremony. Approximately 700 cadets in the program.

    • End of year programs:

    • Trip to Washington, D.C. late April, early May

    • About 40 cadets attend – 5 day trip planned by AAA

    • 2 day trip to Wisconsin Dells mid-May

    • 2-3 cadets from each school attend – about 65 cadets total

    • Recognition Day Picnic and move – 3rd week of May

    • Recognition Program and summer safety talks at various schools.

    • Approximately 3 schools participate.

 

  • SAFETY PATROL FUND, INC.

    • Send out letters of request for donations (January) to local businesses to support end of year patrol programs.

 

  • ADULT CROSSING GUARDS

    • Hire, train, and order clothing and equipment – June-August

    • Supervise during school year. Approximately 40 guards employed

    • Mid-year meeting in January

 

  • SMILING HOUSE PROGRAM

    • Do record checks of people applying for program per PTA/PTO request. Volunteer citizen based PTA/PTO program. A Smiley House parent is an outlet used by children as a safe place to go when children fear for their safety.

 

  • SUMMER PROGRAM AT SAFETY CENTER

    • 2 weeks in June

    • 2 weeks in July

    • 1 week in August

    • Classes for 4-12 year olds

 

  • BIKE RODEOS

    • Hold 2-6 rodeos, May – August, at various schools and businesses.

 

  • MISCELLANEOUS

    • An occasional invitation to present programs (speaking or handout programs) at various civic events, school events, business clubs.

  • BUS SAFETY

    • Why good bus behavior is important and practicing bus evacuation in case of emergency.

 

  • PEDESTRIAN

    • Learn correct way to cross the street and what causes most child/SAFETY car accidents.

 

  • BIKE SAFETY

    • Discuss riding on sidewalks, stopping at driveways and not goingdown driveways into the street.

 

  • STRANGER

    • Puppet shows that teach "What is a stranger?" and what to do if SAFETY any stranger wants to given them something or takes them somewhere: SAY NO, GET AWAY, and TELL A SAFE PERSON!

 

  • CHILD ABUSE

    • What to do if ANYONE hurts them badly or touches the private parts of their bodies: Say NO, get Away as soon as possible, and tell someone (Parent(s), grandparents, teacher, principal, counselor, doctor, police). Video "SPEAK UP – SAY NO".

 

  • MEDICINES

    • Don’t take medicine by yourself and why. Never eat or drink POISONS anything without asking parent.

 

  • CINDERS

    • A new program covering three areas of fire prevention, MATCH + LIGHTER SAFETY, EXIT DRILLS IN THE HOME AND SMOKE DETECTIVES.

    • The Fire Department only, at all elementary levels teach this program.

    • This program features "Cinders", the robotic fire prevention assistant.

 

  • GUN SAFETY

    • Video cartoon that teaches the children four rules if they should ever find a gun

    • (Stop – Don’t Touch – Leave the Area – Tell an Adult).


3rd and 5th GRADES

  • BUS SAFETY

    • Same as younger grades.

 

  • DRUGS & ALCOHOL

    • What drugs and alcohol do to a person and how to tell people "no".

 

  • BIKE SAFETY

    • Rules and laws for street riding, where and why to buy a bicycle license, practicing signals.

 

  • HOME ALONE

    • Key safety, how to keep busy safely, how to answer the phone/door, how to get help if needed, including how to use 9-1-1, and what to do in case of fire.

 

  • STRANGER

    • Review of three rules if approached by a stranger.

 

  • SAFETY

 

  • CHILD ABUSE

    • 3rd Grade Video "For Pete’s Sake Tell" / 5th Grade Movie "Touch"

 

  • SHOPLIFTING

    • (5th Grade) Discussion of consequences of shoplifting.

 

  • GANGS For targeted schools

    • videotape and discussion of why people join

 

  • PREVENTION a gang

    • What happens when you join a gang, problems associated with gangs, including drugs, injury and death; how to avoid a gang, alternative ways to cope with problems and alternative activities.

 

  • CINDERS
